Complying With Mil-Std-129P Change 4

Mil-Std-129 is a Department of Defense (DoD) mandate that is written into supply contracts for all branches of the military. It requires suppliers to correctly mark shipments of supplies at all levels of packaging -- including the UNIT PACK, carton, case, and pallet. Markings include the application of numbers, letters, labels, tags, symbols, or colors to provide identification and to expedite handling during shipment and storage.

Labeling requirements change at each level of package nesting.

Mil-Std-129 Compliance

Government contractors must know what information to print on all of the required labels -- including formatting and barcoding symbology. Contractors must also ensure that label materials match the cited shipping and storage conditions and that all labels are correctly placed according to the MIL-STD-129P.

Since Mil Std 129 is a contractual and compliance requirement, failure to comply may result in rejection at any point of inspection -- which means the shipment would need to be re-packaged and relabeled. If a shipment is rejected it is known as a 'frustrated' shipment and may sit unprocessed for long periods. This results in delayed payments for the contractor. Additionally, if the contractor is unable to comply with Mil Standard 129, the contractor's quality score may suffer - impacting future contract bid success.
