Mil-Std-2073 covers methods of preservation to protect materiel against environmentally induced corrosion and deterioration, physical and mechanical damage, and other forms of degradation during storage, multiple handling, and shipment of materiel in the defense transportation system.  It also defines how to perform quality inspections of packaged product prior to shipment.

 

 Contracts will reference MIL-STD-2073, sometimes referencing arcane abbreviations and codes.  These codes indicate exactly how to package and preserve a specific NSN for transportation and storage to its intended destination.

Mil-Std-2073 1E Compliance

 

DoD Contractors must understand how to package and preserve their shipments in accordance with Mil Std 2073.  Since it is a contractual and compliance requirement, failure to comply may result in rejection at any point of inspection - which means the item may need to be repackaged.  If the contractor is unable to comply with mil standard 2073, the contractor's quality score may suffer - impacting future contract bid success.
