Pre-Printed MSL Labels

Nearly all of the information that goes onto a Military Shipping Label (MSL) comes from the contract itself.  Some information is known to the shipper at the time of packaging such as weight, cube, shipment date.  If you are unsure of what information is required, contact Customer Service.

EasySoft's custom Military Shipping Labels are pre-printed on polyester label stock and meet the barcode requirements of Mil-Std-129P Change 4.  The label's material properties fit the conditions for Mil-Prf-61002-I-A, B, or C.

To order your custom Military Shipping Labels you must first download this Mil-Std-129P Label Order Form.  Complete the form and then upload it using the option above.  If you have more than one NSN in a shipment (MULTIPACKS), you will need to order this item once for each NSN.  Be sure to complete the form for each NSN in the shipment.  There is minimum Set-Up Charge of $30 per order including up to 2 NSNs in the shipment.  For each additional NSN over the first two there will be an added $15 fee.

What is a MSL Label?

 
MSL stands for Military Shipping Label.  Mil-Std-129P Change 4, Section 4.2.1  Defines an MSL as Military (DoD) and contractor- or vendor-originated address markings.

In short it is a 4x6 address label.  The visually distinguishing characteristic of the MSL is the large 2D barcode in the center of the label.

What type of information goes on a Military Shipping Label (MSL)?

Military Shipping Labels identify the piece(s) that make up a complete shipment.  A shipment might be a single box that ships via parcel post.  It might be a single pallet that ships via Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) freight.  A shipment could also consist of multiple boxes or even pallets (pieces) sent from a single point of origin to a single destination at the same time.  The Transportation Control Number (TCN) is the unique shipment identifier and is barcoded at the top of the MSL label.  Other key information include the Ship-From Address, the Ship-to-Address and the Mark-For-Address (or Ultimate Consignee).  The date of shipment, the required delivery date, mode of transportation, and the transportation priority are also included.  The 2D barcode contains many pieces of data that are encoded into the barcode using PDF417 barcode symbology.

How do I apply the Military Shipping Label?

 
Mil-Std-129P Change 4, Section 4.3.2.b(1) specifies placement of MSL address labels as follows: 

"Required address markings shall be placed on the identification-marked side of exterior shipping containers. If a container is too small to accommodate the address markings on the identification-marked side, the address markings/label shall be applied on the opposite side or attached to a paper shipping tag (see 5.1.3) or marking board/panel (see 5.1.8). When the surface of the shipping container or material such as pipe, steel, or wood does not lend itself to direct application of the MSL, or the MSL obscures other required markings on a shipping container, the label shall be attached to a paper shipping tag, marking board or marking panel. The tag shall be large enough to accommodate the label without folding. Separate tags shall be used for identification and address markings."
